General Dentistry for Children

At Metro Dentalcare Children's Dentistry Burnsville, we firmly believe that the best dental care is preventative dental care. Our goal is to help you maintain an effective routine for oral hygiene so that you are able to prevent tooth decay and avoid the cost and effort of dealing with cavities and gum disease. You can safeguard your smile with a visit to Metro Dentalcare Children's Dentistry Burnsville every six months for a professional cleaning and dental exam. Our dental team can remove stubborn plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing simply can't handle as well as identify the warning signs of decay and damage that would normally go unnoticed.

Hospital Dentistry for Children

Our team provides comprehensive preventive pediatric dentistry services, but also provides hospital dentistry procedures for children that may require emergency dental care  or complex oral treatment.

Teeth Whitening

Over time, your teeth's natural whiteness can fade or become discolored as the result of diet, personal habits, or simply getting older. However, the teeth whitening procedures we offer here at Metro Dentalcare Children's Dentistry Burnsville can restore the brilliance of your smile. The Zoom! teeth whitening method has a proven track record of dramatically improving the whiteness of your smile by up to six shades in a very short amount of time. We would love to help you achieve a smile you're proud to show off.

Dental Fillings

Decay dissolves in the tooth and, if not treated, may result in an abscessed tooth causing pain and infection. The Dentist will remove the decayed and weakened part of the tooth and replace it with a filling material to strengthen the tooth. In most cases a local anesthetic will be used that will “numb” the area being treated.

Sealants

Back teeth have deep grooves and pits in which decay frequently starts. The dentist and/or her assistants will “seal” the grooves with a composite resin coating to help prevent the decay from starting. No anesthetic is needed, however the use of Nitrous Oxide is strongly recommended to help the child remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Multiple steps are involved and several necessary items are placed int eh mouth to keep the teeth dry and to insure a long lasting, durable sealant. It may take a few days for their teeth to adjust to the feeling of the sealants on the biting surfaces.

Nitrous Oxide

If a child is nervous, anxious about dental treatment, or has a strong gag reflex, the dentist may use “laughing gas” or “floaty air”. Sometimes the Nitrous Oxide just helps the child relax so the work can be done properly and safely. The child will breathe the Nitrous Oxide throughout their treatment followed by 5 minutes of straight Oxygen to remove all the remaining Nitrous Oxide from their system. In most cases there are no after effects from the use of Nitrous Oxide; however some children may be subdued, quiet, teary eyed or cranky from about 30 minutes following treatment.

Impressions

Any time we create a custom made appliance for a child’s mouth, we take an impression. Custom appliances can be night-guards, thumb sucking appliances, or space maintainers. This is done by using a small Styrofoam tray to either the top teeth or the bottom teeth. The impression material is mixed, placed in the tray, and is the consistency of “mashed potatoes” when it is placed in the mouth.  It firms up over a short period of time before being removed from the mouth. This custom mold of the couth is then used to make a “one of a kind” dental appliance for the patient.

Extraction or Removal of Tooth Due to Crowding

Sometimes primary teeth can interfere with the proper eruption of permanent teeth. When this happens the Dentist may recommend the removal of one or more primary teeth or “serial extractions”. This process of “tooth guidance” allows additional space to help guide the permanent teeth into their proper place. The area will be packed with gauze to control the bleeding. A local anesthetic will be used to “numb” the area being treated to help the child to remain comfortable for one to two hours following the procedure.

Stainless Steel Crowns

If a tooth is badly destroyed by decay, and there is not enough tooth structure left after the decay has been removed, the dentist will recommend a Stainless Steel Crown. Baby teeth are relatively small and large fillings tend to fall out, fracture, or cause the tooth to abscess. Most children lose their front teeth between age 6 & 8, but keep their baby molars until they are 10 to 12 years old. The Dentist will remove the decay, trim the tooth around the sides and place a crown or “cap” over the tooth to protect it from breaking. A local anesthetic will be used that will “numb” the area being treated to help the child to remain comfortable for one to two hours following the procedure.

Nerve or Pulpotomy Treatment

When the decay progresses far enough that the nerve inside the tooth is infected, all or part of that infected tissue must be removed. After “numbing” the tooth the Dentists will remove the infection and place a special medication inside the tooth. This is to keep the infection from causing the tooth to be abscess. However, there is about a 5 to 10% chance the tooth may still abscess in the future. After the nerve treatment is completed, a stainless steel crown will be placed to help strengthen the tooth and keep it from breaking. The need to perform a nerve treatment does not usually add additional discomfort for the child.

Extraction or Removal of Tooth Due to Decay or Abscess

If the infection has spread too far to save the tooth, or if an abscess has formed, it is best to remove the tooth to prevent the infection from spreading to other areas of the body. The Dentist will remove the tooth and the area is packed with gauze to control the bleeding.

Space Maintainer

The Dentist may recommend the use of an orthodontic space maintainer to hold the gap open after a tooth has been removed. This will keep the space for the permanent tooth to erupt normally. A local anesthetic will be used to “numb” the area being treated to help the child to remain comfortable for one to two hours following the procedure.
